The Mini Velar Land Rover updates the Range Rover Evoque

Author: Sam Allibone

The Range Rover Evoque has been completely overhauled for 2019, stealing many styling cues from its older brother, the Range Rover Velar.

New Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Front

The Range Rover Evoque has been dramatically redesigned, aligning itself with the highly popular Range Rover Velar and offering class-leading luxury. Rawdon Glover, Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover UK, commented “With a fifth of global retails being in the UK, I am extremely confident this will be a great second album taking Evoque to a new level of refinement, luxury and sustainability while preserving all the charm of the first model which defined the compact SUV market back in 2011."

The Range Rover Evoque now adorns a low, stern brow atop the grill and lights, enhancing the bold and aggressive design. The sloping roof, narrowing windows and a rising body line accentuates the car’s sporty coupé silhouette, and the rear lights have been elongated to wrap around the edge of the car, featuring the slim simplistic design as seen on the Velar. Other elements taken from its older brother include the side grills and front bumper, as well as the LED headlight and grill design.

The somewhat busy interior of the previous model has been replaced with a minimalist centre console, using two individual screens – one for infotainment, and the other for climate control. Aside from the gearstick, the design is almost identical to the Velar, which will prove popular for buyers. Ambient lighting, two-zone climate control and a centre armrest come as standard, and the seats are upholstered in leather on the ‘S’ trim and up.

Infotainment is handled by a 10” Touch Pro screen, which includes Bluetooth and DAB radio. As standard a 180W sound system is included, but HSE variants get a 380W Meridian sound system. Navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot and Smartphone Pack come with the ‘S’ trim, as well as auto-dimming heated and electrically folding door mirrors.

All models get a rear camera, front and rear parking sensors, lane keep assist, cruise control, speed limiter, driver condition monitoring and emergency braking as standard. Stepping up to the ‘S’ variant adds traffic sign recognition, with SE adding a Park Pack and HSE adding a Drive Pack.

Six engines will be available, the quickest being a 300PS AWD petrol engine (P300) achieving 0-62mph in just 6.3 seconds using 295 lb/ft (400NM) of torque. The cheapest is a 150PS diesel option – the only manual in the range. Other diesel options are the same D150 engine with an automatic gearbox, a D180 and D240. Petrol’s start at 200PS with the P200, rising to P250 and the aforementioned P300.

Range Rover Evoque vs Range Rover Velar

All automatic options feature mild hybrid technology, giving the Evoque the ability to shut off the engine at low speeds and regenerate energy when braking. Jaguar Land Rover also promise an “even more efficient” plug-in hybrid electric vehicle at the tail end of 2019.

Prices will start from £31,600 for the D150 front-wheel drive manual, and £35,950 for the entry-level petrol. It is expected to be seen on the road from Spring 2019.
