Mercedes have unveiled the 2019 CLA Coupé

Author: Sam Allibone

The 2019 CLA Coupé has been unveiled by Mercedes-Benz, promising to build on the hugely popular A-Class Saloon platform.

CLA Front

At the end of February 2019, the new CLA will go on sale following its announcement in January 2019. The car will start from around £28,000, offering a sportier alternative to the A-Class Saloon.

From the front, the CLA Coupé adopts Mercedes’ new design language, making it almost indistinguishable from the A-Class. The lights arch in a sloping design that works with prominent creases in the bonnet to produce a frowning, angry expression. The images released by Mercedes show the car in the Orange Art Edition (sadly not coming to the UK), which features orange accents like the alloy border and front/rear splitter highlights.

CLA Back

Moving around to the side of the vehicle highlights the car’s sloping roofline, outlining a prominent coupé silhouette that can also be found on the more expensive CLS model. The A-Class Saloon has a more traditional square-bodied approach, and a 25% smaller boot than the CLA.

From behind, the two cars are very different. The A-Class’ somewhat chunky design is no match for the CLA’s slim, aggressive appearance. The Coupé has flat-topped taillights and a flush design, as well as a bumper splitter reminiscent of the A-Class A35 AMG.

CLA Interior

As expected, the CLA Coupé comes with the latest interior design from Mercedes. Ambient lighting, turbine-style vents and two large screens atop the dashboard really hit home the premium feel. MBUX – Mercedes’ operating system – has been upgraded with the new CLA, allowing the car to understand more complex orders and adapt according to its surroundings. For example, ask it to take you somewhere specific, and it will find the nearest place with that name – not somewhere miles away.

Even the footlights will turn on if it detects you searching for something in the footwell, thanks to the new motion-sensing interior lights. For those with cash to burn, adding the Energizing Package Plus allows a driver to change the car’s programmes depending on their mood. If the driver feels tired, they can have cold air blown around the cabin, loud music, an energetic massage and a fragrance sent in to the cabin (equivalent to smelling bath salts) to keep them as alert as possible. Add Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC to the CLA, which comes with the Driving Assistance Package, and it will slow itself for bends, roundabouts and junctions automatically.

The CLA will get the A250 engine from the A-Class which produces 225hp from a 2.0 litre engine, as fitted at the CES show. More variants will be available later on, and all with come with an automatic gearbox - two AMG models, the CLA 35 and CLA 45, are also expected.
